What Is A Milky Toner?
Milky Korean toners have become a really popular lately, with more and more skincare brands releasing their own versions. Functionally, they work very similar to a watery toner, but with a few added benefits depending on the ingredients. Watery toners typically have a consistency that's almost identical to water and focus heavily on lightweight hydration. While milky toners also offer a ton of hydration, their formulas are much more rich and nourishing, providing even deeper hydration as well as moisture. They often include additional ingredients such as ceramides, peptides, plant oils, rice and other emollients that give milky toners their rich, moisturizing qualities. Those with extra dry skin may find that milky toners hydrate and moisturize better than a watery toner!
I'm From Rice Toner

Key Ingredients: 77.78% Goami rice extract, niacinamide, rice bran extract, adenosine
Key Functions: Brightens & revitalizes dull skin, deeply moisturizes & hydrates
As the name suggests, the star ingredient of this milky toner is rice! It has a very thin consistency that absorbs very quickly without any stickiness. Rice in skincare has great brightening properties, as does niacinamide, making this milky toner a great option for those looking to address dark spots, hyperpigmentation and dull skin!
Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Probiotics Barrier Essence

Key Ingredients: 5 ceramide complex, 5 fatty acids complex, phytosterols, cholesterol, galactomyces ferment filtrate, bifida ferment filtrate, black rice extract
Key Functions: Firms & plumps, replenishes the skin barrier, improves elasticity, soothes irritation, moisturizes, hydrates, provides a boost of antioxidants
While this is technically an essence, I know many (myself included) use this as a milky toner! The consistency is quite viscous, reminiscent of a serum. Despite that, it still feels very light on the skin and absorbs without any stickiness. As you can see, the ingredients list is pretty substantial. The ceramide and fatty acid complexes up the moisturizing properties considerably. If you've got very dry skin and are looking for a milky toner that is extra moisturizing with some anti-aging benefits, this one might be for you!
LANEIGE Cream Skin Cerapeptide Toner & Moisturizer

Key Ingredients: Cerapeptide (hydro ceramide, phytopeptide, acetyl tetrapeptide-11), camellia japonica flower extract, hyaluronic acid, meadowfoam seed oil, glycerin, snow mushroom extract
Key Functions: Moisturizes, strengthens the skin barrier, soothes irritation, improves firmness & elasticity
This was the first milky toner I ever tried and I immediately fell in love with it. If you're familiar with the original Cream Skin, this is their new and improved version that includes ceramides, peptides, hyaluronic acid and snow mushroom extract. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to try the old formulation, but I can confirm that this new version is the real deal! This milky toner has a thin, lightweight consistency that absorbs well without stickiness. I find it to be the most soothing of the 5, making this the perfect option for those with reactive, sensitive skin.
TIRTIR Milk Skin Toner

Key Ingredients: Rice bran extract, niacinamide, licorice root extract, centella asiatica extract, witch hazel, beta-glucan, ceramide NP, panthenol
Key Functions: Brightens dullness & hyperpigmentation, soothes irritation, deeply hydrates
I found this milky toner to be very similar in consistency and function to the I'm From Rice Toner, but much more soothing thanks to the addition of cica and witch hazel! It has a very thin consistency that quickly absorbs without stickiness. TIRTIR also released a Light version of this same toner that has double the niacinamide content. I've heard it is even more lightweight than this version, although I haven't tried it yet. To be honest, I found this one to be pretty light, and I have very oily skin. I may try it down the road, but I'm pretty happy with this formulation. This milky toner is perfect for those with sensitive skin wanting a brightening toner that also soothes and keeps skin calm.
FLASKIN Rice Enzyme Protein Toner

Key Ingredients: Rice extract, niacinamide, centella asiatica extract, oat kernel extract, beta-glucan, hydrolyzed rice protein, papain, bromelain, ceramide NP
Key Functions: Brightens dullness & dark spots, exfoliates dead skin, improves skin texture, deeply hydrates & moisturizes, soothes irritation
This milky toner is probably the most unique formulation on my list! From exfoliation with enzymes from papaya and pineapple, to brightening with niacinamide and rice, to soothing with oat extract and ceramides, this one does it all. The consistency of this toner is very thin and absorbs quickly without stickiness. I also found it to be quite gentle despite containing exfoliating enzymes. If you're looking for an all-in-one milky toner that hydrates, brightens and exfoliates, you definitely need to try this one!
